Running Redneck under Win 95/98 I found a post back in March by the "Crashmaster" which described how to run RR from Windows if you have 32 meg of ram. It works great on all my dos games but Nascar and Nascar2,I can network my pc to buddy in local calling range through dial up networking(1 pc must have Plus) and play multi and it works on a Lan.Forget dealing with Dos and messing with modem init strings to try to fill buddy with lead.If you just play by yourself this will keep you from having to reboot all the time and probably run smoother. In order for the shortcut we are going to make work we need to rem some lines in your startup files and add 2 lines to your sys.ini. If you presently use dos mode to run dos applications we will need to make another short- cut to reboot to the same configuration as we wont be loading any memory managers or cd drivers in your startup files. DISCLAIMER I dont know if this will work for everybody but haveyet to see it fail. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK/PROVIDED AS IS Step 1 Open your config.sys file in an editor(sysedit, dos editor) and make the following changes: If HIMEM is being loaded place remspace "rem " in front of line so pc will ignore it. If EMM386 is being loaded also rem it out If it has a bunch of numbers at the end of it you might want to see what device in system is claiming a piece of memory. Probably in older video card,3d cards really inexpensive now(hint). If there are any lines relating to your CD rem them out,if after rebooting your PC doesnt recognize CD then you will need to remove the rem and a space at beginning of line. Save changes(You did make a backup didnt you?) and open your autoexec.bat file. Again you need to rem out your cd related lines. Save changes and open your system.ini file. Locate the section called [vcache] and add these 2 lines MinFileCache=2048 MaxFileCache=2048 This was noted as optional for RR but nessacary for Quake or Quake2. Save changes and reboot system and test your windows based stuff. Dont try any Dos stuff yet. If all is well with PC now we need to make a shortcut to game. I made my shortcut to the setup.exe file because most of the time I am choosing a user level or playing a network game,if I choose to play the regular game I can just launch game from there. If you want to make shortcut to RR.exe it is up to you. Step 2 R Click on desktop and choose new/shortcut place path of file you want(setup or RR)in box and click on next. Give it a name and finish, now r click on shortcut and choose properties. Set the options on the Tabs as follows. Properties Tab set(check) the close on exit box click on advanced button, set the "Prevent MS-DOS based programs from detecting windows" option button,Clear the other options. Click OK Font Tab set the bitmap only option. Memory Tab Set Conventional memory to Auto, set initial enviroment to auto. Set expanded memory to none, set extended memory to none. Set DPMI memory to 12288,this can adjusted up or down a notch to suit. Screen Tab Set usage to full screen, set the fast ROM emulation button. Clear (uncheck) the Dynamic memory allocation option. Misc Tab Clear the allow screen saver option. Clear the "allways suspend" button Set Idle sensitivity to low Clear th Quick edit option. Set mouse to exclusive mode. Leave Warn if still active on Clear "Fast Pasting" option Disable the win shortcuts you dont want. You should be ready to run the game now, If you want to set up a shortcut so you can reboot to a dos setup(ie the files as they were before we touched them providing that your stuff worked) make another shortcut to the command .com file in windows folder. This time in the properties Tab/Advanced button/ choose Ms-Dos mode and set the specific dos configuration button Then place the lines of your auto and config files in the boxes below. Now when you D click that icon you will reboot to Dos,when you want to go back to windows type exit. This works good because if your dos application locks up when you reset it reboots to dos thus saving about 6 minutes nowadays. Networking If you have a Lan all you need after all pcs run redneck under windows is IPX adapter loaded on each machine, then launch network game from setup menu. If using 2 win 95 pcs over modem 1 pc must have Plus so it can be a Dial Up Server,Then connect using PPP server type. Make sure you have IPX adapter loaded in Control Panel/Network/connection Tab. If you get pcs networked (If you need help borrow a win 95 help manual to step you through getting win95 network up). Then go to modems in control panel, click on propeties of your modem , Connection tab and goto port settings and set the buffers to low.then go to advanced button and turn off flow control and error correction. These will need to be put back when you go surfing but game likes it better this way. That should do it ,if you arent comfortable editing system files then get a computer nerd to assist you.
